On Monday, March 11th, my fellow classmates Niamh O’Shaughnessy, Becky Quealy, and I gave a presentation to our Victorian Literature tutorial class. We spent two weeks preparing the presentation, and nerves were high when the big day arrived.
On our first meet up, we brainstormed the various topics that we could possibly discuss for the project. We came up with three major themes to discuss: duality, science, and gothic tropes. I decided to focus on duality, as I found it quite an interesting topic throughout the novel, occurring in various places. Niamh chose gothic tropes to discuss and Becky chose science. Working with the girls was effortless, we have known each other from the beginning of first year, and we have a nice connection. We met up a few days before the big day in order to piece together the presentation and make sure it had a perfect flow.
We had previously discussed how we don’t feel very comfortable with public speaking – standing before an audience and discussing our work felt extremely daunting, but we knew that the project was professional and interesting. We based the project on the novel “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde”, a book from the author Robert Louis Stevenson. Click this link for a brief, fun synopsis of the book!
Surprisingly, the presentation was a lot easier than I had expected. The class was thoroughly engaged with our findings, and our tutor was extremely impressed. The relief that we felt afterwards was amazing – our work (thankfully) paid off!
